Thinking Activity on ELT 1

The Role of Teachers and Learners

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

- Albert Einstein

One teacher can change the life of individual. As "चाणक्य " said that,

"  शिक्षक कभी साधारण नहीं होता, प्रलय और निर्माण उसकी गोद में पलते है।"

Teachers can change the world and make students self dependent and individual.  On the other the role of students also very important for the better society. Students and teachers both are the pioneers in making the the society better. The role of teachers is not only teach students curriculum but one teacher can bring students out of classroom and make them aware about the current situation which are happening un the world. So, what are the characteristics of students and teachers. The answer is below.

♧ Characteristics of Student :-

● Curiosity and Focused mind :-

" There is something pagan in me that I cannot shake off. In short, I deny nothing but doubt everything. "
- Lord Byron

According to my opinion " Curiosity and focus mind " is most important characteristics of student because what curiosity for knowing more about one perticular topic makes students intelligent and knowledgeable. Yes, but doubt and questioning are also important for students because if students have doubt then they can raise questions and try to find out the answers. The result will make him or her more knowledgeable in one  perticular topic.

● Flexibility

" Flexibility isn't showing off how far your leg can stretch, it's showing how far your preserverance  can stretch. "
- Chane Vdw

Here " Flexibility " means to set everywhere with everyone which makes students more powerful and expert in their works. Student can able to do everywork whatever they have to do. They cannot deny that this work is not mine or I will not do that. This  ability makes students expert and sincere towards their work.

● Self Dependent  :-

" Your self worth is determined by you. You don't have to depend on someone telling you who you are. "
- Beyoncè

Yes, it is true that teachers are never on holidays they are always here for helps to students that doesn't means they will everywhere with students. On some way students must go alone. In short self dependent is more important for students.  If students will self dependent then they will able to solve every problem whatever they will have in future.

● Decision maker :-

" Sometimes it's the smallest decision that can change your life forever. "
- Kwri Russell

This is common problem for all students that they are not able  to take right decision at right time. Fear and hesitation makes them feel inferior than other when they are in position of responsibility. So, this characteristic is very important for students. They must be able to take right decision at right time which make them more individual and responsible person in future.

● Willingness

" The amount of good luck coming your way depends on your willingness to act."

We all  know that Activity participation is more important for students. If they will active in participating then they will increase their ability in everything and they will be a multitasker also. So, Willingness in everything and everywhere is most important for students.

●Characteristics of teacher

●Positive relationship:-

Positive relationship with students and colleagues makes teachers more sincere and role model for others. Because there must be different level students in the classroom and teacher might get sometime satisfactorily and sometime unsatisfactory answers from students. On this time positive response of teacher must be required and also passion level of teacher works majorly in their positive relation towards students.

● Purposeful and relevant teaching  :-

Proper lessons planning and work accordingly helps teachers to making their teaching style more powerful and relevant. When we will going for teaching the students might be at the centre. Teachers cannot teach them only curriculum but along with this teacher can teach them this with appropriate current situation example. So, students gets up to date knowledge of current knowledge, history and other fields also. So, teaching methods of teachers works centrally in all of this.

●Enthusiasm :-

This is the most relevant and important characteristic of good teacher. Teacher can not teach and work without enthusiasm. What enthusiasm makes teachers more knowledgeable. If teacher get up to date knowledge then and the he/she able to teach their students more effectively. So, enthusiasm to learning and teaching is more important for teachers.

● Reflectiveness and collaboration  :-

All teachers have different teaching methods and they works accordingly. But teaching with something creative methods makes topic more easy for students. So, teachers can come with creativity and activities, so students can get it more easily. Collaboration is also useful to teachers. If they works collaboratively, the chances of better work might be increased. So, effectiveness is more important for teachers.

                     Criticism of Matthew Arnold
                                On Poetry

Born :-   24th December 1822
Death :- 15th April 1888

He was a English poet, cultural critic and also novelist and colonial administrator. He was elected as a professor of poetry at oxford in 1857. He called the third great Victorian poet. His literary career leaving out the two prize poems had begun in 1849 with the publication of " The Strayed Reveller and other poems " The mood of his poetry tends to be of plaintive reflection and he is restrained in expressing emotions. He felt that poetry should be the Criticism of life and Express a philosophy.

♧ His Famous poems are :-

         • " Thyrsis " ( 1865 )
         • " Sohrab and Rustum " ( 1853 )
         • " The Scholar Gipsy " ( 1853 )
         • " Rugby Chapel " ( 1867 )
         • " Memorial Verses to Wordsworth  "

● The Study of Poetry by Matthew  Arnold :-

Matthew Arnold criticised Victorian age and gave his view on two major point :-

¤ Arts and Morality : Arts for life's sake
¤ Arts and Aesthetic pleasure : Art for Art's sake

According to Arnold the first great principle of Criticism is that,

" Disinterestedness or detachment.  Disinterestedness on the part of the critic implies freedom from all prejudices , personal or historical. "

He asserts that literature and poetry is, " Criticism of life. " Two great principle must needed in the Criticism of life : Laws of Poetic truth and seriousness of matter, felicity and perfection of diction and manner are exhibited in the best poets.

Matthew Arnold says that poetry interpret life and two ways for that, " Poetry is interpretative by having natural magic in it, and moral profundity. " The aim of the poet must be high and excellent seriousness in all that he writes for that there are two essential qualities:

~ The first is the choice of exellent action.

~ The second is what Arnold calls the Grand style - The perfection of form, choice of words, drawing its force directly from the matter which it conveys.

                    Touchstone Method

His general principle of the poetry was, " Touchstone method "  which introduced Scientific objectivity to critical evaluation by providing comparison and as the two primary tools for judging individual poets. While giving Touchstone method he makes readers aware about two fallacies Historical fallacy and personal fallacy. While expressing his view of the historic, for the personal or the real he writes that,
" In reading poetry, a sense for the best, the really, excellent and of the strength and joy to be drawn from it, should be present in our minds and should govern our estimate of what we read. But this real estimate, the only true one, is liable to be superseded, if we are not watchful by two other kinds of estimate, the historic estimate and the personal estimate both of which are fallacies. "

For the business of Criticism he says that, The best which has been thought and said in the world. "  by using this knowledge to create a current of fresh and free thought.
