Hello ! Readers,
Here is my task on ecocriticism and ecofeminism assigned by Dr. Dilip Barad sir. I will put here my point on understanding of ecocriticism and ecofeminism. I hope you will enjoy.
☆ Ecocriticism :-
Ecocriticism is an intentionally broad approach that is known by a number of other designations including , " Green cultural studies", " ecopoetics" and environmental literary Criticism and is often informed by ecology, sustainable, design, biopolitics, environmental history, environmentalism and social ecology among others. There are little aims about ecocriticism. Its scope has broadened rapidly from nature writing, romantic poetry and canonical literature to take in film, television, theatre, animal stories, architecture, scientific narratives and an extraordinary range of literary texts.
According to Cheryll Glotfelt's definition,
" Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment. "
In the study of ecocriticism what ecocritics does that they underlying ecological values, what precisely, is meant by the word nature and whether the examination of " Place " should be a distinctive category, much like class, gender or race. Now let us see one example of Ecocriticism.
☆ Example of Ecocriticism :-
Daffodils
By William Wordsworth
Wordsworth's ," I wondered lonely as a cloud " is a beautiful poem. We can see this poem as a various approaches and also as a historical and social background also. Now let us see the poem as a Ecocritical persepctive. On the basis of Marxism, we can find out Ecocriticism in much more easy way. Ecocriticism seeks to relate literature to the natural environment. The main purpose is that we can take action against climate changes. Now, how we can see the poem " Daffodils " as a ecocritical persepctive.
" I wondered lonely as a cloud "
Scott Hess, in his article, " John Clare, William Wordsworth, and the framing of Nature " argues that Wordsworth treats the Daffodils like a photo on a post card. Wordsworth doesn't involve himself in nature. Further more Hess argues that Wordsworth acts like the tourists who comes by ones and snaps a quick picture before moving on. He said that Wordsworth seems more concerned about his own feelings rather than about Nature. Hess said that by framing the scene as a moment of Nature at its best beautiful, restorative, sublime Wordsworth is being too selective in his representation of the environment.
☆ Ecofeminism :-
☆ Example of Ecofeminism :-
" Chipko Movement and Ecofeminism "
" Preserve,
What little Green
Is left in this world.
For our children
might have to google,
What trees were. "
- Sindhu
It is not romantic hug. It is movement for save the trees and the forest largely by women. Chipko movement began in Uttarakhand in 1970s as a forest conservation movement in India. It is a nonviolent protest in India. It is a movement of some eco - groups by helping to slow down the rapid deforestation and the need to save trees and increase ecological awareness. It is a movement, which began to address the issues of tribal and marginalised people. Gaura Devi was the main leader of this movement. Today this movement as being seen as an ecofeminism movement. In 1987, the Chipko movement was awarded the, " Right Livelihood Award " for its dedication to the ecologically sound use of India's natural resources. It is a resistance against cutting of the trees. In the region of Himalaya the forests there are beautifully interlinked with their lives and its products. For the development of the forest contractors cut down acres of trees and make a loot of the timber. But the women formed the backbone of the surge. It is the result of women power. After ten year later the movement had spread to the full of Himalaya region as well as from Kashmir to Arunachal. This movement largely headed by women.
Thank you...

☆ Ecofeminism :-
Ecofeminism is a combination of ecology and feminism. Ecofeminists activism grew during the 1980s and 1990s among women from the anti - nuclear, environmental and lesbian feminist movements. Ecofeminism, established by French feminist Francois d' Eaubonne in 1970s is a relatively new form of feminist theory. It caught the eyes of Feminist as a result of break down the structure.
